I need help identifying what effect was used in the video at the link below. It was used throughout this video so I'm have to believe the text and images weren't manually sliced before importing into AE. At least I hope not. Our client would like to replicate that look in their video. Any thoughts? I initially thought the shatter effect but from what I could find doesn't go to that level of simplicity.

Have you though of each character being a comp on itself with white solids sliced in the desired way, leaving an alpha channel then all placed in a mother comp where they interact
