Green Screen but low res
by Harry Katz on Apr 28, 2009 at 8:13:58 pm

I usually have green screen shot in HD, with the talent several feet in front, but one project was shot in DV. I usually go from FCP to Motion and the Primatte filter works like magic in eliminating the green. But with DV, when I try to put in a background, there's a great deal of pixelization around the perimeter of the talent that. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Sorry, there's no magic bullet when green-screening DV. As a chroma-keying codec, DV plain-old stinks on ice.

Here's why that's so:

Take the time to watch the whole thing: it could be the most informative fifteen minutes you spend this week.

By the way -- true 1920x1080 cameras with 4-4-4 color resolution DO indeed exist. They only cost about $150,000: the Sony Cine Alta series. Panasonic probably makes a few models, too, and just as pricey. Most people settle for 4-2-2 color resolution. You probably do, too, but you just weren't aware of it.

There's no two ways around it: you'll have to do a LOT more work to pull a good key. You MIGHT think about getting DV Garage's DV Matte Pro, but it's still going to be a pain in the neck to pull a key, and don't expect miracles.

DV's a real downer, no?
