Composition Software to select

In several forums I found that Discreet will replace the Combustion by the Toxik and that Apple don`t give more support and update to the Shake to take step to a new software.
The After Effects now brings benefits to integrate 3D, but it is not used in many studies of digital composition, more is used for motion Graphics.
So, if I want to learn to make digital composition professionally, which will be the best option of software to invest time and money?
