Hey all,
How would I go about to do the photo mosaic effect consisting of small images forming a larger one in after effects but instead of having it made with stills, have it made with footage?
I came across the ayato tutorial that uses a mosaic generating software and Card Dance but it doesn't give the option to substitute the stills with footage.
any ideas?

I don't know if it would be worth all the effort you'd have to invest in it. If you could pull it off, it would be very, VERY cool. But as I say, a lot of work.
The principle behind a photomosaic works in the same way a halftone works in the print world. With a halftone, you see dots of varying sizes and colors, and your brain interprets them as a still picture.
Now, what if you could animate the sizes and colors of those dots? You'd have a picture that would morph into a different one, and it would not be an easy thing to do.
You're proposing to do the same thing with motion footage. You would either have to be extremely selective in the HUNDREDS of pieces of footage you'd probably need to keep the picture the same, or you would have to select those hundreds of pieces of footage very painstakingly so that they turn into a different picture.
But it WOULD be cool.
