Make 'Shrinking Empire Map' in AE ??
by Brad Foubister on Jun 25, 2008 at 4:51:42 pm

We need to make a shrinking Roman Empire for a school presentation.

The type you see on movies where the map doesn't move, but the colored area (representing the extent of the empire) slowly recedes. . .

Could anyone direct us to a tutorial that may be of help?

Most appreciated,
Brad & Petra

If I understand what you are trying to do, I would simply layer the map and color correct the top layer. I would then animate a mask revealing more or less of the color corrected layer.

You can make a comp-sized solid and put a Roman Empire-shaped mask on it, then animate the Mask Shape property. Fiddle with the transfer modes and opacity to make it look cool.

Since you gave no information about the map you're using, I leave the job of removing the animation from water areas to you.

Even better would be to create a map-sized comp along with the map, put a map-sized solid on it, and THEN animate the Roman-Empire-Shaped mask. You can then nest this comp in a video-sized comp, animating position and scale if needed.

There's a tutorial (AE 5.5, but still works in later versions) on the sort of "nested map animation" dave is referring to here:

Should help to get you started
