I just got a lowell light kit. It has riffa, tota, omni and pro lights, the question is this, what is the specific use or situation for the lights. Which one for key, which is best for a background light, which one for a hair light, etc... What is the main use for the tota? I know these are basic questions, but the kit didn't come with any documentation or suggested uses. Any of your help and expertese would be appreciated.
thanks

The best way to get it is to have someone model for you and experiment with the lights and you will see what what each instrument does. A secret to ligthting is controling the light source. I think you wil find the tota by itself is a great worklight, but put it inside Chimera softbank and now you have something you can use for video.

Hi Matt,
Lighting fixtures are like a painter's brushes; they don't come with "documentation" either.

While certain types of lights are commonly used for certain purposes, everyone lights differently. For example, I may choose a Kino Flo Diva for a kicker, while others prefer a Fresnel. It all depends on the effect you are after and how you prefer to achieve it. It's usual practice to employ soft sources as key, but for some looks you have to use hard lights; nothing is set in stone.

Unfortunately, your question is over-broad; we can help with specific suggestions and approaches, but the "how to light" question is well beyond the scope of any forum.

Perhaps you can find someone in your area willing to give you some training; you can always start experimenting, but it can be the long way around.

Best regards,

Matt, your first trip should be to the Lowel website: http://www.lowel.com There you will find a description of each light along with its intended use. Also other helpful hints for using this gear.

Then do a Google for lowel and you will find other helpful links.
