Transcode RED 59.94 into a 23.976 project

Hey guys,

I'm trying to get a clip that we shot at 59.94 on the RED, into an AVID project at 23.976.

We shot it at 59.94 so that it would make for a really nice smooth slow motion effect when played at 23.976.

But whenever I bring in the RED file using AMA into the project and then transcode, it always ends up playing at normal speed.

Any idea how how I can get the clip to play in smooth slow mo? When I view the clip in Red Cinex, it plays in slow mo, so I know it's been shot properly; just can't figure out how to get AVID to recognize it.

To quote Michael Phillips:

"Import/capture material in a 1080i project. Open bins in the 23.976 project. When you cut it into the timeline, it will automatically be time adjusted to for 23.976 using the Mix & Match feature (v4 and v5). Once on the timeline, open the motion adaptor applied and change its speed to 1:1 rather than the adjusted rate. You will want to keep the interlace to progressive active. "

Thanks for the response.

So my last question is when I have my clip on the timeline of the 23.976 project, I basically open the motion effect that has automatically been applied to the clip, and then select "promote" option next to "motion adapter"... but then what?

I don't see the option to adjust the speed to 1:1...

I figured it out. My source was 59.94p, not "i", so I had to transcode into 720p 59.94 and then open then bin in my 23.976 project. It's only my offline so the resolution change doesn't make a difference.

Another option is to do a QT import.
The console command 'ignoreQTrate = TRUE' will give you a slomo clip, as each frame will be a frame and thus the duration is altered.
This way you don't have any resolution trouble.

Bouke - do you have to strip the audio off the Quicktime first? I can't remember if Avid ignores the audio and import only the video, or if you have to make the QT file video only or the console trick doesn't work.

Good one. I must admit, i forgot...
(was a long time ago i used this, and that was on an other version of avid than i run nowadays...)

Trial and error it is. But a QT ref should work, is easy to make and alter...
