A couple weeks ago I attended the Adobe Road Show and spoke with the Black Magic folks. Although the rep didn't say so specifically, he strongly implied with a bit of a wink that Black Magic and Avid might have something to announce with the next release. Total speculation, and you wouldn't want to build a business on it, but I think Avid is sincere about opening itself up to third party devices. Of course the time frame is anybody's guess.

They did it on the audio side last year with Pro Tools 9. If they're smart they'll do it on the video side with an update to Media Composer 5.5 and soon.

An Avid rep a NAB this year told me that more is in the works with 3rd party devices.
and I'm sure Avid is working hard to get a new, hopefully 64bit ver
out sooner, rather than later. especially after all the wonderfull PR fcpX is getting.

At NAB I received a few inner twinklings of Kona 3 drivers working with Avid MC for a summer release, but alas, nothing written in blood, so who knows. It would be very unwise for Avid not to do it. And as mentioned in this thread, they already did it with ProTools HD (which we use), so it's nothing all that new for them. In the interim, we'll either use an AJA Io Express or the Matrox Mini. But if that lags too long, we'll probably have to switch to Premiere to use with Kona 3 because Nitris may end up being too costly for my facility. Would really like to stick with Avid MC if we can though.

I'm hoping Avid do extend the range of 3rd party hardware.
I am in the same position as many others editors - seriously considering a return to the Avid family after so long away, but having two I/O devices that are so close but currently so far away - Kona3 and MX02LE.
After trying the 30 day demo of Avid, i'm pleased to see most of the reasons i disliked Avid all those yeasr ago are no longer an issue. I was surprised how much more comfortable i felt using it again.
Now if they would just announce which hardware they are aiming to play with, the purchasing decision would be a lot easier and quicker!

Last Wednesday I got a response from Avid on Twitter about AJA Kona 3 support with a positive response... the first I had seen in a public venue. I was so excited I blogged the tweet thread:
They're listening and recognizing the people's needs. I'm amazed really... this is a far different Avid than the company I loathed 15 years ago and up just about through to the first decade of the 21st century. First I thank Apple for that, then Adobe.
And Media Composer 6 will be 64-bit, confirmed by Avid on one of their forums.
"With regard to integrating more 3rd party hardware, Greenfield noted that Avid supports the Matrox Mini, but that this is only the first of many 3rd party vendors Avid will support. “Our goal is clearly to be more open,” he said. “We're providing the SDK (software development kit) to 3rd party vendors so they can create drivers for Avid. Whether it’s AJA or Blackmagic…Everyone has their own favorite. We recognize the need for low-cost I/O We will provide the SDKs to these folks as we have with all the camera manufacturers.”
So hopefully we will even more I/O options soon.
With so many people unhappy with the FCPX release, many are saying they are looking to Avid and Adobe.
With so many Mac Pros fitted out with Kona/Blackmagic cards owned by unhappy FCP users, you would imagine Avid would be very keen to offer hardware support for these users as quickly as possible or may potentially lose out to Adobe if they wait too long.
