relinking P2 media at new resolution
by Dan Bark on Nov 6, 2009 at 8:51:18 pm

Help! Here is my dilemna that I'm hoping to explain well enough for someone out there to help me with. I am editing a video that was shot on P2 cards in HD (1080I/60) and then transcoded to dv25 for editing. Final mastering is in 16x9 SD. The problem I'm running into is that there is a ton of footage where a host is Chromakeyed over backgrounds and, even using the spectrakey, I am getting dv artifacting which I have been unable to remove. What I would like to do is somehow bring in all of my host footage as either 1-1 or dv50 so that I can pull a better key. How do I best do this? I'm assuming its some combination of unlinking and relinking to the P2 material. Do I have to transcode everything again or can I create some kind of link from my edited sequences to the P2 material which is all stored on an external hard-drive? I'm on an adrenaline using 2.81 software. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. DAN

Create a new bin. Re-import the needed P2 clips. Transcode to your chosen higher quality codec. Highlight your DV25 sequence. Right-click and choose "transcode". In the "Video Parameters" choose "highest quality" and your clips should be replaced with the newly transcoded clips. It's useful to turn your "SD/HD" clip color on in the sequence hamburger menu when working like this.

Thanks David. Questions though. When I go to re-import the P2 clips, the system only lets me bring them in at their native HD resolution. Since this will lead to some storage issues on my end, is there anyway to transcode directly from my virtual drive or do I have to bring them in as HD first before transcoding to DV50 which is my desired resolution. Secondly, when I do chose my dv25 sequence and then tell it to transcode to highest resolution, does it matter if the clip names are slightly different? For instance, the dv50 clips now have the .new01 after them. Or does the system only look at the timecodes to determine clip placement. Lastly, you mentioned turning the SD/HD clip color on in the seq. hamburger but if I'm only working in sd (dv 25/50) what would this show me? Sorry for all my confusion but this is all new for me. thanks. DAN

Sorry, I left out a step.

"When I go to re-import the P2 clips, the system only lets me bring them in at their native HD resolution."

Under the "format" tab in the project window, choose "30i" after you've imported the P2 clips you need. That will unlock the SD transcode options. You will not have to import the HD media. You can transcode from a virtual/linked drive.

"Secondly, when I do chose my dv25 sequence and then tell it to transcode to highest resolution, does it matter if the clip names are slightly different?"

No, it shouldn't. In the relink settings choose: "relink by source timecode and tape", "relink non-master offline clips to any online items", "relink method: highest quality" (or whatever res you want to relink to).

"Lastly, you mentioned turning the SD/HD clip color on in the seq. hamburger but if I'm only working in sd (dv 25/50) what would this show me?"

Nothing, but when/if you switch back to HD for online, SD clips will be yellow in the sequence as a reminder that you need to relink to the HD media.

I just verified all this with a quick test of 180i transcoded (from a virtual drive) to DV25 and DV50. The sequence relinked to the DV50 just fine :-)
