DNxDV Codec Problems
by Lou Borella on Nov 5, 2009 at 6:54:48 pm

Im working on a Avid Media Composer v3.5.4 at NBC.
Some of the footage I'm trying to incorporate is SD and they are AVI files.
I need to upconvert everything to HD 1920x1080 but the AVIs use a codec that is not
avail on the PCs here. So I brought the AVIs home stuck them in AE and did the upconvert using
the DNxHD 145 8bit codec. When I open the new QTs on the edit PC the movie is missing the entire bottom half!! Its entirely black. The dimensions are still 1920x1080 but the bottom half of the QT is not there. The same movie plays back fine on my MacPro and my Macbook Pro. The mac codecs that I downloaded from AVid are current. I'm not sure of the QT codec version number on the PC.

This is destroying my workflow!!!
Any thoughts?

Thanks
Lou Borella

You will need to install the newest version of the codec on the system at NBC. There has been a modification in the codec with the introduction of v4. If you have downloaded the latest version of the codec at home, it can be incompatible with the codec on the 3.5.4 system.

So what you are saying is that AVID's own codecs are incompatible with each other!!!
Don't they realize that installing software on corporate PCs in large workgroups is frowned upon?

How do I determine what version of the codec I am running on the PC.

Did you read the information on the webpage I linked to? Should answer your questions. I don't think they are thrilled that they had to break some compatibility in order to have SMPTE compliance, but they apparently felt they needed to do that. As for installing this on large workgroups: "we recommend that all customers update their codec files to the latest version regardless of their workflow." This suggests this is an important maintenance update for all systems across your facility.
