FCP Uncompressed Quicktime into AVID?
by Satish More on Jun 30, 2009 at 12:05:18 pm

Hi,

Is there a difference between a pure uncompressed QT file made in FCP or AVID?

I have someone digitizing my HDCAM tapes to uncompressed quicktime on a MAC FCP machine.

I need to import those to DNxHD on my PC Avid MC 3.5 Bay.

I have heard people having problem with contrast on certain FCP imports into AVID, but most said that it was the Prores 422 QT.

Will that happen with a pure uncompressed QT? Or is a pure QT seamless between FCP and AVID or MAC and PC?

I want to clear this out before the digitizing happens.

Thank you very much.

Regards
Satish

You shouldn't have a problem with an uncompressed QT, but be sure to import with RGB selected as that is the color space that FCP works in.

Wow!

That's a great info Terence. Thanks for the tip.

It's a relief.

Do these other posts saying that they had a gamma shift in transferring ProRes to DnxHD happen because they imported in 601/709?

I am just curious. My real questions are answered.

Thanks again.

Does that mean FCP is incapable of exporting 601 compliant files?

I think what he meant was that FCP defaults to RGB.

I am sure that you can choose to export in 601/709.

I'd love to have it confirmed as I deal with numerous FCP people who either don't have a clue what I'm talking about when I say we prefer to receive 601 files or don't even bother to ID their files as such, making my job more of a PITA when importing their stuff into MCA.

SO many people who use FCP are clueless about video specs. That is the curse of having cheap software. now that Avid MC is down low...especially the academic pricing...you'll see that more and more with Avid too.

The price we pay.

My pie-in-the-sky wish is for Quicktime to have a built-in 601/RGB flag that any compatible NLE could read and properly interpret...

Um, since the uncompressed codec has 4:2:2 in the name, I going to go with it being 601/709 based, not RGB.
