Safe Colour Limiter Effect

Hi,
In Avid MC there's an effect called 'Safe color limiter': I just wondered whether...
(a)People generally find this effective?
(b)The defaults should be ok to use without tweaking (I don't know anything about colour limit ranges etc.. so this is all a bit of a dark art to me).
I'm working on a PAL project if that makes any difference,

I use the color effect to limit my work...but i also watch my external scopes to see what is getting limited and make the necessary adjustements.
I would suggest doing some reading on color levels, video levels etc...Personally I could not put out quality work if I did not understand scopes....even things like Web work can benefit from scopes, as they can help in the color correcting procedure....and of course if you are going to TV it is a must.

Thanks Mark. Yeh, understand what you're saying - it's just fairly early days for me on all this and don't have the resources at present to invest in a scope. Want to make my short film as professional as possible just using AVID. Been bitten with illegal colours on an earlier project so know what you're saying in terms of getting this right. If the safe colour limiter is mostly effective then that will be good enough for me at the moment before I possibly get more kit in the future,

You can also use the scopes inside of Avid.....I have tested them against our exeternal scopes and they seem to match up pretty well. the advantage to the external scopes is that they update quicker.

Thanks for that. Just showing my utter naiveness I didn't realise there were scopes in AVID MC. Right, time to reach for the instruction book I think... time to do some reading!

They are easy to access. Simlpy open up the color correction, then on the right and left monitors you can choose the scopes that you want by using the pulldown menus above the monitors. It would be nice to have scopes that could be seen relatime without the need to go to color correction mode. Tektronix had a plugin that you could put on a filler above your video, but they discontinued the product. Hopefully this will be a future feature, or it exists and I have not yet found it. Premiere Pro actually has realtime scopes....
