Footage Captured OVERLY DARK

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (10.5.3 with quicktime 7.4.5) and from Avid Xpress Pro to Avid Media Composer 3.0....my system is a G5 powermac, dual processor, with 5.5 gb DDR SDRAM and an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card.
Since upgrading, whenever I attempt to capture footage (both with a Panasonic PV-GS12 and a Cannon HV30 HDV cam via Firewire 400) my footage will capture very, very dark--unusably so in many cases.
I suspect this is due to a video card issue as I've read there may be incompatibilities with this video card and Leopard...also, the footage captures dark in Final Cut Pro and Imovie as well...pretty much eliminating the possibility of this being a software issue.
I also have basically eliminated the idea that this is a monitor issue as the same footage can be viewed clearly when played back from my camera directly into the monitor...but when captured via firewire, it comes in too dark.
Can anyone give me any advice as to how to eliminate this problem and capture video at the correct color levels via my devices and firewire 400? I'm wondering if I need to purchase a new video card--what make and model number is advisable..not looking to break the bank, but want to solve the issue.
Additionally, I've read in other areas of Creative Cow forums that it is not advisable to install FCP Studio 2 and Avid Media Composer
to the same internal Mac HD...which I have done in this current setup...could it be related or even the cause of this dark footage? What can I do to fix this....fyi, I am in the middle of editing a project and do not necessarily have the time to spare for an archive and install or an uninstall/partition the hard drive/re-install.
Thanks for your consideration....
