what's With Avid Import Codec's
by Richard smith on Aug 16, 2008 at 12:56:29 am

what's With Avid Import Codec's? I understand DV25 verses DV50. But Can anyone tell me what the difference 2-1, 3-1, 1-1 and all the others when importing GFX's from AE. so many to choose from. when looking perfect gfxs and see the perfect in AE but look like Garbage in AVID. Whats the deal Here!? example color shifting of font colors on edges, anit alising problems etc.etc.

1:1 is uncompressed video. The other numbers are compression factors compare to that - for example 1:1 is ~ 2 min/gig where a 2:1 would give you 2 mins/gig, etc. DV 25 is a different compression scheme that is about 5:1 with ~ 5 mins/gig. This is done by compressing the original uncompressed video. You should really not see artifact differences between 1:1 and 2:1 and even 3:1. I would look to other issues like proper color space, field ordering etc.

What color space are you rendering in AE? try exporting sequential TIFF from AE as a test. Import as RGB then 601 at any of the 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 in Avid and see if you are seeing the same thing.

I will try that @ 3:1. I'm Curious does the increase Compression ratio such 3:1 or Greater increase the Bit Rate and size of the file when imported which inturn increases the resolution. Or am I wrong and the increase ratio will degrade the image?

The higher the compression ratio, the more detail or color infomration will be lost (depending on the compression scheme). A 3:1 import of the same file will look way better than one imported at 15:1s, etc.

Same in MPEG2 compression - a CBR of 8500Mb/s will look better than one set to 4500 for the same media.
