I am assistant editing with Avid and on a film that will be telecined. (is that telecine past tense?) Well I was asked to find how long each reel is. The reels are four different sequences. I was under the impression that the Avid can tell me this straight out. From my investigation I think it can be found where the timecode is on the record monitor. Under footage? Its already set as "footage-35.4-MAS" and the numbers come up as "2164+03" is that the reel length in feet and inches? If not...where can I find it?

It's feet and frames, not feet and inches. If you don't know how to measure I/O in Avid, ask someone to point out the various options to perform that task.

Then Mark In and Out at the beginning and ending of each sequence, and - either above the Record monitor or in the Timecode Window (under Tools) - create a line that counts I/O, and make sure you select the right counter type (in this case, 35mm 4-perf is likely to make sense). If you are to measure in minutes and seconds, make sure that the Master TC is counting at the right speed (especially in PAL).
