Re: What tape format does your Broadcaster require? by Bob Zelin on Jul 20, 2008 at 9:37:26 pm
Every broadcaster has different delivery specs. Some require Betacam (but I shot my show in HD, how can I deliver a beta tape? ), some require DVCPro. Some require Digi Beta, some require HDCam, some require Panasonic DVCProHD, some require Sony HDCam SR (but that machine costs $1200 a day to rent !!!!!!), some require D5.
What does this mean? It means that it is YOUR JOB to call every damn broadcaster that your client wants you to deliver to, and find out what their delivery specs are, because Discovery Channel has dramatically different delivery requirements than Fox Network.
Is this a pain in the ass - you bet it is. Why should you have to rent a Sony SWR VTR - why can't you just deliever your HD master on a Firewire drive, and let them transfer it to any damn format they want ? Because THIS IS NOT HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED. It's gonna be YOUR AGGRIVATION, and YOUR MONEY to make the broadcaster happy (whose cost will hopefully be covered by your clients).

We can only deliver HDCAM or HDCAM SR to broadcasters in NZ.
No file-based delivery yet. And I'm not sure when that might happen, with the vast number of formats, and options I can see that it could be a nightmare for broadcasters.

A couple of good dupe houses here in Boston will take your Master and then they can spit it out in whatever other formats you need. They'll even ship the deliverables with no rush charges applied!
