Disk Drive Problem

I have determined that video overruns and choppy playback issues are related to my internal separate 465gb hitachi deskstar hard drive...there are no problems in the windows disk check...please advise as to what my next steps are to solve this problem

Hmmm. Your post is a little vague, so we'll probably need more info to really help.
This info would help:
How fast is the hard drive (5400, 7200, 10K)? Is it SATA? IDE? How full is the drive? Is all your media on this drive, with none on your system drive? What resolution is the media you're trying to play back? Is the audio sample rate the same as your project sample rate? How many layers are you trying to play? Any effects? If there are effects, are they rendered?
I'm guessing the drive is too full, it's not fast enough, or it's a combination of the resolution you're trying to play back and the speed of the drive.

no way...i reformatted the drive, nothing on it, no layers no effects...but i can play video fine from a 40gb firewire drive...i'm not sure how to test/replace/reseat/fix/ the internal hard drive

Avid has told me that i should partition the drive as avid does not recommend drives over 250gb .... i do not want to pay money for partition software because this drive worked for over a year before i encountered video playback errors on it...but if this is the case..can anyone advise me how to partition, or any other advice?

Avid recomends the 250gb limit if your using OMF media.
If you use MXF media you don't have to worry about that limit.
On my system at home I use 500gb ide drive with no problem and thats on a unqualified VERY outdated PC. But that's dv25 resolution (I'll uprez my side projects at work to 2:1 or 1:1 depending on the project)
What resolution are you working at? also those hitachi deskstar drives are pretty famous for failing. your drive may be starting to go.

let's just assume that the drive failed...can it be taken out and repaired?...should i replace it with the same drive?...should i buy and external...any advice would be greatly appreciated?

How old is the drive? If it's not too old you could try sending it back. But you can buy an internal IDE drive for under $100 these days.
If you don't need it to be portable, the only real advantage of external drives are you only start'em up when you need them. So that saves some wear and tear on the drives. IDE drive will start everytime you start your pc. Most of the damage/wear is done to a drive when the spin up or down.
I usually get drives from zipzoomfly.com they have decent prices and I've never had a problem with them.
