LCD Monitors for Color Correction
by Mark Steele on Jun 27, 2008 at 11:46:24 am

We have decided to move away from CRTs for use as the reference monitor in our Symphony Nitris edit room (basicly because they aren't made anymore) and I'd like to get some feedback about what is being used in the area of flat screens out there.
IKAGAMI SONY JVC
Does anyone like of dislike a specific model?
A while back we tested a SONY that was incredible when one sat directly in front of it, but any angle off axsis and the picture started to wash out. This is not good for clients sitting next to the editor.
Thanks

There are NO GOOD LCDs right now! Get used to it.

We have seen and tested them all.

Off axis sucks on every single one.

Blacks suck on every single one. (Except for the VERY expensive eCinema which isn't shipping yet)

The overly expensive Sony BVM CRT is a joke when it comes to blacks also.

Currently, the professional plasmas do a better job of black and off axis than ANY LCD! Unfortunately, the smallest size they come in is 42".

SED technology (and it's sister FED) is the best hope for the future, but it is still a few years away.

So what you are left with is getting used to the LCD monitor for correction. Get used to washed out blacks. Get used to sitting dead nuts center when you work. Get used to SD footage looking like crap.

Once you get over that, the JVC is the best deal of the lower end monitors. If you want to waste bigger bucks, go with the Sony BVM LCDs.

Personally, I can't get used to the LCDs. I'm milking my CRTs for every last bit of breath. I recently re-tubed all my monitors before Sony runs out of tubes.

Some people keep a CRT in the suite as well as their new LCD.
Even a 14" if a 20" is too big.

Something to consider...
Neil.
