Avid Full Screen Playback FX3500
by Lav Bodnaruk on May 4, 2008 at 3:05:41 am

Hi guys,

I am finding myself in a bit of a problem. I upgraded my graphics card to Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 from Nvidia GeForce 7600GT and I cannot get the Full Screen Playback (FSP) to work any more? I have tried a zillion (a slight over exagguration, but it certainly feels like it) drivers to get it working on my Media Composer 2.8.1 and no luck.

I am hoping that someone out there, who is also running the FX3500, might be able to tell me what is the driver they are using? I tried the latest driver, and worked my way down as much as I could. The video plays and works fine on all other aspects other then the full screen playback.

And the funny thing is, before the update, the GeForce card was running it all OK on its latest driver from Nvidia web site - not the case with the Quadro.

thank you
Lav

This is a supported card. According to the 2.8.1 Readme:

The supported NVIDIA graphics driver is version 91.85.

Thanks Joe.
I am actually using that particular driver right now and there is no Full screen Preview. The message is that typical one that states the graphics card is not supported and to visit the avid support page - it doesn't give me any more info on why it is not working.

Any thoughts on what it could be if not the driver?

thank you

Lav

I would un-install/re-install the hardware. And be sure to re-boot. It sounds like there may be some leftover reference to the previous video card. Once you are back up, make sure you check the options in Avid for FSP to "on" and "select this monitor" for FSP.

Hi JOE,

thank you for your post. Unfortunately, I am still no where closer to getting the FSP to work. I have take the driver of the new card off, removed the hardware, restarted numerous times and basically did everything from scratch. I then got it back up with the 91.85 driver.

Again, no full screen playback is available.

I have configured the advanced settings of the card as per avid help file, moving the Hardware Accelerator slider. I have even tried locking FSP in the console...

If anyone has any ideas of why I am unable to get the FSP going on, please let me know? I am doubting that a card can be damaged, as everything else is working. I am doubting that there is any issues with the monitors used, since the FSP worked on my previous card (which i have also tried to put BACK IN and it still works with it! how bizzare!) which suggests that the settings in the software are also OK?

My guess is that there is a clash between the settings of the card and the Avid, and that it is probably something really obvious...

Thank you!
Regards,
Lav

Are you using the driver that came with the AVID software ie: C:Program FilesAvidUtilitiesnVidiaWinXP_2k(91.85).exe ?

Hi guys,
Yes, I am running the driver 91.85 which was found in the Nvidia Utilities folder of the Avid (Program Files). I have set this driver up through hardware acceleration as mentioned in the read me file (not that any of it enabled the fulls screen playback).

I am running this on XP SP2

My machine is made up of: Intel Core Quad Q6600 @2.4GHz processor, Gigabyte x38 DS5 motherboard, 4GB of 1066HMz RAM (although only 3.5GB shows as it is 32bit OS not 64bit), the mysterious Graphics Card "Nvidia Quadro FX3500", bunch of drives i.e. one for OS that is 150gb SATA II and 4 on raid 0 (sata II 320GB).

I also have BlackmagicDesign Multibridge but that is not plugged in when I try and run AVID. This was purchased for any imports I may need to do (instead of Mojo).

Hope this helps.
For some reason I am thinking it might be quicktime that is clashing with the card? Is there a particular setting one has to do for the quicktime to work with Avid? I remember having to go to Advanced TAB of the QuickTime and switching SAFE MODE GDI only on. This is something I had to do when I had my Nvidia GeForce running as the AVID was popping up with error messages. Now, with the FX3500, regardless of what I click there, there are no errors - but also no FSP.

Thank you!
Lav

Are you running quicktime 7.4 or 7.4.x? Avid isn't approved to run with those versions of quicktime--the highest it's approved for is 7.3.

If you're not running 7.3, download it, uninstall your current version, and install it. Try then. It's about all I can think of at this point.

And you said you did set your drivers up according to this, right?

nVidia Driver Setup for Avid

Thank you for your reply Michael. I was in fact running 7.4.X PRO QT, which never presented any problems with the uncertified Nvidia GeForece 7600GT that i had prior to this FX3500 Quadro card for playback of the Full Screen.

None the less, in a hope it would help, I have removed it and have gotten the QT 7.3 version on there now.

Unfortunately, there is still no FSP.

And yes, I did follow the instructions as per that link you had posted.

I am on the end of my wits here. No idea what else to have a stab at. If anyone thinks of anything, please let me know. I am at that stage where I am considering a complete format and start from scratch, even though I am in the middle of the project right now, because editing without FSP is not my thing... and I am really only set-up for that to work (i.e. no client monitor at all right now)

thanks again
Lav

one last thing to check before buying an approved system...

in the Settings -> Video Display

is "OpenGL Hadrware" set to "Quadro FX 3500" or "Software OpenGL"? It should be set to the video card, not software.

Hi there! That must be it!
In my Video Display options I do not have the Graphics Card option, ONLY the Software OpenGL? Why is this? Is there a setting I have to do elsewhere to make sure I can get the Hardware option?

I am assuming this must be the cause then.

Remember, I did have the FSP working with a Nvidia GeForce 7600GT card in there, with SoftwareGL. I must be able to change something in my system preferences that makes Avid understand that the new card FX3500 can work as Hardware OpenGL.

Any info on how to work this about would be much appreciated! I am crossing fingers that this is my core of the problem

Thank you for mentioning this Annael!
Best,
Lav

there is something wrong somewhere. Your videcard should come up. Have you tried reinstalling everything?

You should be running MC 2.8.3 with QT version 7.3.1. You can't run full screen mode while DNA is active...make sure the DNA/1394 switch is set to 1394 on your timeline.

Hey guys,

I am still without FSP even after re-installing everything. I took some days off to attend a film festival and have bought a HP xw8400 workstation up on my return.

I will now put my fx3500 into this unit and see if this will make any difference as I was out of option on why the FSP was not working with my current set-up.

The most puzzling thing of all is that the Video card was not showing up in the avid as a hardware option and that whilst I had the none-certified card (Nvidia GeForce 7600GT) the FSP was working...

Hopefully now that I am installing both Avid and Windows from stretch on this dual quad core xeon machine, i should be OK.

I will post the results as I get there eventually

many thanks
Lav

What model computer were you using before the xw8400, and was it qualified by avid?

Hi Mike,

the computer was not qualified by Avid, but it had no problems running the MC till I put the new video card in it - the qualified nvidia quadro fx3500.

It was a gigabyte x38 ds5 motherboard, with q6600 quad core cpu, 4GB of 1066MHz RAM, and bunch of different drives in RAID 0. The video card with which the MC worked for long time (I cut a film on it with no probs) is GeForce 7600GT but when I put the qualified FX3500 Quadro in it, I lost the FSP.

I am yet to build up the xw8400 (install the software, etc) and see if the FX3500 works OK in this set-up or if something similar will happen.

Thanks!
Lav

... perhaps slightly off my original topic, but since I bought this new machine and it has a SCSI 300GB 15000rpm drive in it, would you recommendation be to use that drive for OS or something else?

I am also thinking about seeing to GHOST my current OS drive from the computer mentioned above to the new xw8400 300Gb 15,000rpm drive.

Any thoughts on that?
Thanks again!

Lav

Hi guys,
I read your interesting thread on FSP on Avid. I tell you my amazing experience on this issue. This is referred to Avid XPress Pro 5.7.5 but it is still funny.
I installed Xpress on my very very very low budget notebook (an old HP pavilion 6000 AMD turion dual core) with a non certified video card (geforce 7200)e GB ram and a hard disk 5400 rpm. I'm running quick time pro 7.5. As you can see everything is saying to me: IT WILL NOT RUN AT ALL ON YOUR SYSTEM.
But... Everything works fine!!! I have FULL SCREEN PLAYBACK (also on a big 40" LCD screen) with full quality (the green button on the timeline) with effects rendered on the fly... The only annoying thing is the warning: “Not certified video card” as I start the application - and once every circa 10 sessions I get the message: "FSP is not allowed on this system". I restart and everything goes fine.
Why this?
Many Thanks for you attention and special thanks to Avid that makes our life so exciting...
Marco
