NAB 2012: Canon Unveils 4K Cameras

At NAB 2012, Canon jumps to 4K resolution with the release of two new cameras. The Cinema EOS C500 is the next step up from the Cinema EOS C300, introduced last November, and comes in both PL-mount and EF-mount versions. Also new is the 4K EOS-1D C DSLR, incorporating Canon Log Gamma.

I hear the guys at RED are unimpressed with Canon, Sony and JVC talking about and showcasing their 4K solutions. RED boasts we're 5K so what.

$30,000 for a camera that needs an external recorder to do 4K? And not available until the end of the year... how is this competitive at all to what is already on the market? I suspect this will be collecting dust on the rental house shelf.
