I'm having an issue with vibrating NTSC video when moving from a legacy Media 100 System to Final Cut. Shots with camera movement - especially pans - vibrates when it's brought into FCP. De-interlacing and use of the flicker filter in FCP seems to help some (but softens the image) and I'm not sure that's getting at the source of the problem. So I'm wondering if someone with more tech savvy than I have can straighten me out.

Here's the work flow:

Video is shot on a Sony DSR 300 (DVCAM) and imported directly into Media 100i (v 7.5) via analog (component) inputs at 720x486. The Media 100i is running on a G3 with OS 9.2. I noticed the installed transcoder is JPEG Motion B for Media 100.

Video is edited on this system and exported as a self-contained video.

The self-contained video is dropped directly into Final Cut Pro 6.04, which says the clip "... does not match this sequence's settings or any of your sequence presets... Change sequence to match clip settings?"

I dutifully answer YES - and the clip goes in and plays without the need to render - These are the sequence settings:

Everything looks fine until I get to camera motion. Then - the video seems to vibrate back and forth. It becomes most notable when I run it through Compressor and create a DVD, then play it back on a conventional monitor.

Here are some things I've noticed that might be clues:

• If I export the FCP and bring it back into the Media 100 system - the video looks just fine, with only the slight degradation you might expect attributable to a generational loss.

• M100 video the FCP timeline appears with a noticeable black line around the top, right and bottom screen edges.

• De-interlacing using a 2 video channel method with 50% opacity on V2 and de-interlacing filters set to Lower on V1 and Upper on V2 helps somewhat, but softens image sharpness. Flicker filter is also used at max settings. Not sure whether that's helping or not.

ANY HELP would be appreciated...

Thanks!

Try changing the Field Dominance to Upper (Odd).

Traveling and not editing at the moment but I'll give it a try - I presume you're thinking reverse the fields when I bring it into FCP, before I start editing? (I think that's the only way that makes sense.)
thanks

Yes, when setting up the Final Cut input. Do a test on a couple of shots before changing all of them - I've never done this so I'm not speaking from experience. Let us know how it works.

Tried it - didn't work. Tried various permutations of the filter - also no luck. I think the best thing is to get a new board and keep the Media 100 isolated and on its own. Thanks for all who chimed in here. Always appreciated.

I plan to play with it a bit more. If I find success I'll let you know.

Try exporting as "QuickTime > DVStream" with the Color Range set to "0-255".
