Re: what is the difference between the vincent 601 and p6000 cards on media 100's by Thomas on May 31, 2005 at 1:04:04 pm
The Vincent 601 is an older card that work with analogic signal (square pixels 768/576 in pal mode). Media 100 realised a 720 enabler under os 9 (until V.7.5) that allows the Vincent card to play perfectly medias digitized in 720. The problem is that when you digitize directly in 720 with this card, the image quality is not quite good. In fact it's unsuable. I tought at a time that the problem was resolved under OS X (V.8.x), but unfortunately it's not. So the card has to be used in 768 in digitize mode to work correctly. It's not such a problem regarding the fact that new HD and SW systems recognise those medias directly and convert them in 720 in real time. Nevertheless it's better to get a P6000 board for two other reasons also (DV Option and Lossless capabilities).

Are you sure it's not something else? I've been digitizing with a refurbished Vincent 601 at 720, and I'm having no quality problems. Haven't heard anything officially from Media 100 about this problem.

It is true. There is a problem with the Vincent 601 boards to digitize in 720 (601) resolution. Only P6000 boards work correctly with that (and of course HDs)

Can you tell me what sort of quality problem should I be seeing? I'm not arguing the point; I'm just worried that maybe my amateur eyes are missing something obvious. I'm using Media 100i, 8.2.2, OS 10.4 (and no problems with Tiger, BTW).

I have used a media 100 patch designed allow vincents to work at D-1 under OS9 that looked really awful. The closest description would be that it looked like bad tv reception. Odd flicker and an overall softness to the images. For my purposes, it was unusable. The patch I had however was not designed to work under OSX. Hmmmm.

I haven't installed any patch. When I get home tonight I'll double check all my settings and report back. My video certainly looks clean and clear - nothing like what you're reporting. Maybe I shouldn't rock the boat...

Yep, I have a Vincent 601 card, Media 100 8.2.2, OS 10.4, and I'm using my DSR-45 to digitize component HDR, 300 KB per frame, at 720 by 486. It looks very good.

It's been a long time, but as I recall, for whatever voodoo reason, some folks using the 601 could successfully dig at 720x486 and others couldn't.
I don't think there was any reported rhyme or reason to it.
Yours is one of the good ones, Peter
