Smoke does have several ways of doing TEXT. There is a TEXT module in ConnectFX and you can use it on a clip or over a clip. It's very functional and has some animation abilities.
There is also 3D text inside of ACTION with very nice character animation tools and there are preset animations.
Smoke has the best PSD import functions outside of After Effects.
When you import a PSD in Action, it will take each layer and assign an axis to it. Then global those to a main control axis. It will maintain the composition so it looks just like it did in PS> This allows you do do any type of animation to each layer and effect each layer. This then ends up on the timeline. Or you can import a PSD as media either flat or layered with alphas and layer it on the timeline.
