I just received a Quadro 4000 to put in my mid 2010 Mac Pro and when I opened the case found that the 5870 uses both power supplies. I've seen some people are using y splitters and also there may be a way to get power from an open optical drive bay. Is the splitter idea okay? Does anyone know how to tap the power in the optical drive bay? Or should I just swap the 5870 out for a 5770? thanks

Power splitter seem to be ok with the 5770, not so sure about 5870. Though I'm inclined to think it would work.

I am using this config an is working fine to me, 1 cable split for the 5870 from mother board and one single for the 4000. never had a problem. but i was told about the power over requirement by the 2 card is not what they built for the mother board, so as precaution i always look the temperature of the tower.

Its do-able, but you might need to get some extenders... and you need to do some screwdriver work inside the Mac -- usually involves removing the fan assembly to gain access to the gap between the optical bay and the tower's main interior.

Two things, though. Most people opt to stuff another HD in the optical bay's open slot...
and before swapping the 5870 out for another ATI, it is worthwhile considering acquiring another nVidia card, either Apple-certified or a compatible flashed much much faster CUDA card.
