I'm trying to capture footage from my Sony DVCAM DSR-11 deck. The deck is wired via a 400 or 800 (tried both) firewire cable into a LaCie hard drive, then into my iMac. Whenever I plug the DSR-11 deck into any of my hard drives, the hard drives are "shut down." The hard drive icons disappear from my desktop, and I get an error message on the screen saying the drives were not ejected properly. What is happening? I haven't used this deck in a while, but I never had any trouble using it on my old G5.

are hard drives running off bus power or have their own power plug? should have their own for capture.

you might want to try a firewire repeater hub as well.

this will also protect against burnt firewire ports.

Yes, the drives are running off their own power cords. The firewire repeater hub is a great idea -- will look into that. I hadn't even heard of those, so thank you. I actually gave up trying to connect the deck via firewire -- just wouldn't work. So, I'm using a consumer "Roxio Video Capture" cable and software to get the miniDV footage onto my computer and external drives. Works great, tho I don't know if quality would be better via firewire cable. Thanks for your advice -- really appreciate it!

Have you tried rebooting computer after your daisy chain is set up?

Or if on a mac open disc utility and see if both devices are recognized there. If so mount them.

Have you tried using a camcorder in place of the deck for capture to see if the issue is not the deck?

Have you tried connecting the deck to the computer without the media drive? Maybe the deck has a bad firewire port or some other issue.

If deck does work solo, you could, as a workaround, capture from the deck to your desktop and then move not copy your media to your media drive once the deck is disconnected.

Hi. I'm having the exact same issue with my DSR-11. It was working fine with various drives but now every time I have it chained to my HD, it ejects/crashes the HD. As my Mac only has FW-800 ports and the DSR-11 only takes FW-400, I have to use a drive that has multiple ports.

Anyone got a clue?
