Hello,

I just bought a Sony HXR-MC1 and it comes with software to help with importing video clips into a PC but no explanation of how to import the AVCHD files into a Mac to edit in FCP. There is a note in the manual directing you to a website <http://guide.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/mac/ms/us/> that only tells how to import stills into a Mac. When I play back the video in the camera, the pictures look great. I'd love to be able to get them into FCP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Scott Allman

I'd like to know this one myself... We are looking at this option and we are very curious if and how this works with FCP.

Here's how. For both iMovie08 and FCP. I've tried the iMovie technique with my MC1 (using a SDHC card reader) and it works.

Hey Carroll,

Here is what my friends at Macprofesionals, here in Michigan, suggested for importing from the HXR-MC1 into FCP. They suggested using the Apple intermediate codec. And by the way, I usually shoot with an HPX500 or HVX200 but I am really enjoying what I can do with the HXR.

AVHCD Importing -

Attach camera to PowerBook. Open icon that apperas on desktop, drag AVCHD folder to an external hard drive. Open FCP. Go to Log and Transfer Window – Click on “Gear Icon” top center > Click Prefs > Select AVCHD - Change Apple ProRes 422 to Apple Intermediate. Import as you would normally import P2 media.

Disconnecting HXR from computer after importing –
Close Log and transfer window (if going directly into FCP) –
Drag AVCHD/Camera Icon to trash -
Click “END” on camera monitor screen –
Disconnect USB Cable –

Sequence Settings –
Frame size - 1920 x 1080 HDTV1080i (16x9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio – Square
Field Dominance – Upper (Odd)
Compressor – Apple Intermediate Codec

If you would like to see some video from the HXR imported and edited in the manner I described. Go to http://www.youtube.com/scottallmanvideo and look at the piece labeled "Intubation". I edited this last night.
The CU and "over the shoulder" shots are from the HXR, the WS is from an HVX200.

I hope this helps,

Scott Allman

Hey Scott,

Your post was very helpful. I don't have FCP. Do you think this transfer would work with FCP Express? I'm looking to buy FCP Express.

Thanks for any help!

Curtis,

I'm not sure, I've never used FCP Express.

Good luck.

Scott

Hey guys,
I just finished a shoot using 2 HXR MC1s today. It was our first time using them. I copied all the media off the cards onto an external HD and then imported the footage into FCP using the Log and Transfer settings described above.

Here's the kicker: There's a glitch in all of the footage so that every 15 frames a frame from 7 frames before gets inserted. The result is that every half second there's an extremely noticeable jump in the footage. I know I must be doing something incorrectly in the log and transfer. If anyone knows how to fix this I would be very very appreciative. Thanks,
Mark

Ok, so, I haven't figured out why FCP isn't importing the footage properly, BUT, I tried importing it using IMovie and it worked... Crisis averted. But, if anyone knows anything about the FCP import issue I'd still be interested to know what I was doing wrong. Thanks,
Mark

Log/transfer is the correct way to do this, but it needs to come from the cam/deck itself via USB. I've never gotten it to work using an external HDD.
FWIW, I use ProRez vs AIC, but AIC should work equally well.

os is there a way to recover the footage once you have all the raw files on an external hard drive? i've returned the unit but would rent it again if it was as simple as dumping all the raw files onto a memory stick and converting via the hxr-mc1.

Have you resolved the issue? I'm going through the exact same thing.

Thanks! This is great to see. What about streaming video (either HD or standard def) in real time. Is that possible?

Please tell me if you have figured out how to download videos from this camera to your Mac operation system.

Thank you!
