I'm in the market for the best hdv camera for the buck to shoot 2nd unit work on a feature-length film. Read that 24p works best for if/when you plan to convert to film for exhibition. Also read that Sony's HDR-FX1 doesn't have 24p, but has something "even better" on it for the film look.

I'm looking for some opinions on this as the FX1 seems to be the best deal on a HDV camera.
Another question: the reason why I'm questioning the FX1 as opposed to the Z1U is that my research shows the main differences between the Z1U and FX1 are XLR inputs. With a $200 1/8" to XLR converter I can take care of this shortfall on the FX1 right?

Thanks.

I think you need to read Sony's product literature regarding the differences between the FX1 and Z1. There are many.

I'd much rather have built in XLRs than have to tag on a box which adds one more device with ins/outs/cables that can go wrong.

The fake 24fps on the FX1/Z1 is HORRIBLE by most people's standards. Exagerated judder and some say lose of resolution too. Much better to convert to 24p in post.

Totally agree with Craig. Shoot clean in 60i and get something like Nattress' Film Effects and do your 'film-look' effects with your NLE.

XLR->1/8" is not a hassle(no confusing cables either as Craig had mentioned). I highly recommend the DXA-4 made by Beachtek - the best you can get (~$170).

I don't know why everyone is concentrating on that 24p crap within the Sony Z1...when they should just be leaving it at 30p. If you like the Z1...and want a good film look, here ya go!

After some extensive research (Well, extraction from those who did), I found that knocking the sharpness (Detail) down to 3 (They can go from 0-15), and make sure the black stretch is on, while using one of the cine gamma switches (1 or 2)
