i use a PD-150. the heads were replaced in april. i haven't had any problems since they were replaced. i just bought new tapes from thetapecompany.com, sony premium 60m mini dv's. i shot a music video a couple days ago with one of these tapes. watching the footage today, i noticed some distortion in the image. it looked as it would were the heads dirty or malfunctioning. i shot another video today, with the same tape stock (from the same box), and saw no distortion whatsoever.
are there such things as dud tapes, or is there something wrong with my camera? if the tape is bad, is it dangerous to put it in my camera again to view the footage?

josh

Please discribe the destortion? dirty heads usually causes pixelated or banded video.

the distortion is pixellation. that's exactly what it is. it shows up in the same spots on that tape, each time i replay it. and like i said, i recorded on another tape two days later, and didn't see any pixellation.

If it shows up in the same places on the tape its probably in the recording, a couple of things could have happened, the tape had a bit of debris on it and monentaryly fouled the heads, this usually happens in the begining of the tape, this tends to clear on its own, or it can take a bit to clear and screw up the tape in different places, if you can change tapes and the problem disappears its probably limited to the recording on the original tape.
I usually FF and RW tapes before use using a rewinder, and blacken the first 20sec, this conditions, retensions the tape and removes debris and dust that maybe present, also a rewinder reduces the wear & tear on cams/decks for normal tape rewinding.

thanks Blast1. i'll try FF and REWing the tapes and blacking the beginning from now on. i'll do it in my cheap small camera. i don't have a rewinder. the worst parts were in the beginning on that tape. there were some other parts that had a little pixellation, but i can't recall any major pixellating later in the tape. so that fits that theory.
so is it dangerous for me to stick that tape in the camera again? should i maybe FF and REW it in a deck before trying?

If the trash on the tape disappeared later in the tape it probably recorded with a fouled head to start with and then cleared itself, the tape probably isn't damaged just the recording on it, sometimes the tape itself will act like a head cleaner.
