Tim E. MayerRAM Question
by on Oct 27, 2005 at 1:31:00 pm

Hi,
I'm in the process of attempting to build the DIY II project Big Blue.

I'm planning to use 2GB of Kingston RAM in the system.

What I'm not clear on is if this should be ECC or non-ECC RAM.

Advice anyone?

Thanks!

Figured it out myself.

The ASUS P5AD2-E only supports non-ECC.

I had that board for a year, and the best RAM for it is OCZ PC-2 4200 Platinum Rev 2. It comes in 2X1024 sticks for about $400. Never use 4 sticks with that mobo, i.e. 4X512. Also, Corsair and OCZ make PC-2 5400 and 6400 that work well in it. That board likes low latency, as opposed to high bandwidth (like the 955 platform). Try running at 675 Mhz at 3-2-2-8 timing at 2.0 volts for video editing with that board, or, if you OC the bandwidth, relax the timings a bit and you'll be fine. Kingston is decent RAM, but can't keep up with the big boys.
