Please do post anything you find working with XDCAM EX and also doing so in a mixed codec environment. People in the COW XDCAM EX forum may find this interesting.

You mentions "transcoding" I assuming you're just re-wrapping to XDCAM EX .mov. Are you using FCPX "Optimized Media" to transcode to ProRes while importing?

Yes, we do just re-wrap. Sorry for the wrong terminology.

In FcpX at import we "Copy to Events Folder".

We then create a backup for the original files and a seperate backup for the "Event" and" Project" by dragging the directories in the finder to other drives.

In FCPX Preferences Import
Do you have Create Optimized Media selected?
That would result in the files being transcoded to ProRes.

In fact that would have a major impact on a project like yours given the mixed codecs. If you "stay native" (don't have the above enabled) you might slow down the editing process if the computers have to decode H.264 and XDCAM EX simultaneously in real time.

And I'd love to hear how FCPX reacts to a ton of XDCAM EX footage since FCP 7 was always unstable with those large projects.

We posted a new entry, finally have internet again.
http://fcpxmegatest.blogspot.com/
This entry is a lot about features we like and features that missing or not as we would like them for our working-speed.

There will be a clip soon.
We are well over 1500 clips that have probably turned into 7.000 keyword items already after 30% of the shoot.
We are mixing XDCam, DVCProHD, h.264 (DSLR, GoPro), framerates from 25 to 60 and edit on relatively old Macbooks at 1080p.......so far so good.

Is that an iPad being used as a second monitor for your browser in one of those shots?

That's pretty cool. What app do you use to turn the iPad into a second monitor and is it easy to move your browser over there?

Tony, I use AirDisplay. But there might be others. Just make an ad-hoc network or join the same Wifi net.

In FCPX is a command "Send Event Browser to second monitor". Easy.

New clip online. We are getting the groove of FCPX. It rocks pretty bad. We are shocked how fast you can shoot out such a clip.

Good idea. If this Show Events on Second Display can be combined with Shower Viewer on a Second Display, then you could have a very nice three-screen setup in your office, with a high quality large secondary Viewer and the iPad for touch control of Events and a lot of main computer real estate for the detailed view of your Timeline on the main computer.

Hopefully less eye strain too as now that height of clips can be larger and/or the number of ‘tracks’ you view at the same time in the Timeline will be much more likely to show all your ‘tracks’ without scrolling up and down in most projects.

Thanks for these regular updates about your workflow.

It's great to see the way people are attacking different jobs.

Cheers!

New entry in the blog. First documentary is currently at quality check ;-)
http://fcpxmegatest.blogspot.com/2011/07/output-part-1.html

This explains how we got to output 8 dedicated audiotracks (with the help of FCP7, mind you)

Not much to report. FCPX works fine with our workflow.
