I have an offline that I need to recreate. No EDL/XML, timecode ref, nothing, just a Quicktime file and DSLR rushes. Trying to manually match up a frame from the raw footage to the offline is really annoying without Dual Viewers.
Add in the fact that there's no way to change the opacity of a clip without going into the Video Effects Menu, and I have to say I'm not enjoying FCPX much today.

How about editing the clip above the off line, crop clip where most visually convenient to find match, then slip tool to visualy match. zero crop and you're done. not the most fluid of workflows but at least you don't have to expand menus, colapse tracks or else...

The offline is the Primary Storyline. I'm connecting the rushes to the offline in the appropriate places.
Didn't think of using Crop, thanks!
Still going to be painful though. Anyway, I'm resigned to this session sucking so I've come to terms with that at-least.

You're almost there. If you have the offline in the Primary storyline, then edit in a short clip that's just close but not exact to somewhere in the middle of the underlying clip. Set it to half opacity and then, with the upper clip selected, press the comma and period keys to slide the connected clip until you see a match. Once the match is made, expand the in and out of the upper clip as needed and restore it to full opacity. That's how I would do it even if I had dual view screens but one on top of the other is still better than comparing them side-by-side.

I was tempted to go back and cut this in 7, but then I remembered all the clicking I'd have to do to load the clips in to the Viewer.
Now that the iOS stuff is out, hopefully 10.6 rolls out soon. The Dual Viewers don't even need to be 're-imagined' or 'revolutionary'. They just need to be 2-up to make me happy.

Surely there's someone on this board that can tell you why it's much more efficient to do this in X with a single viewer. You're just not holding it right.

Select clip, Control-v, find the opacity parameter, open it, drag down the opacity bar.
I think you can copy/paste the opacity effect as well (command-option-v), as long as that's the only thing you need to copy/paste.
