OK this is weird.

As I transition into FCPX I have been using the "import from camera" command and FCPX recognized the 5dMk3 CF card in the reader as a camera and I was able to import footage selects with no problem.

I tried to "import from camera" yesterday and today and...nothing. FCPX is not seeing the card.

Any ideas on what gives?

LH

Lucky. Well apparently you were just that when you were able to bring in Canon footage via Import from Camera. ;)

Just kidding. To import from a card the FCP X workflow is File > Import > Files. Perhaps you plugged in a USB to the camera itself, not a card reader, and you just got, we'll Lucky.

(Sorry I couldn't resist)

Uh, Not for nothing but I can tell the difference between my camera and a card in a card reader.

So you are saying that there are demons in my camera and I was able to do something you are not supposed to be able to do?

If you plug SOME cameras in via USB, it will be recognized differently by FCP X than just plugging in a card.

I don't have a 5D MkIII, so I can't speak to that. On my 7D it doesn't make any difference.

Do you have stills and movies? If so, remove the stills from the card.

First off, get a card reader. They're cheap and easy to use and far more convenient than plugging in your camera. Get one that reads multiple card types so you can use other camera cards with it as well.
Then simply copy your .mov files from the card to a new folder - give it an appropriate name - on your desktop or external drive, go to Import From Camera, click Open Archive and choose your folder with the .mov files. You can then import like Log and Transfer - set in-outs and import individual files - or just select everything and import the whole works.
Very simple and you have the advantage of an archive of your files in addition to what's on your card.

Sorry I was not clear...I am using a card reader so let's table that. But...your suggestion of creating another folder is interesting workaround (though a ridiculous extra step in the grand scheme of things).

I will give that a try...or do the importing using the EOS Plug in in FCP 7 (to get my selects and make a .dmg file of the whole card) then restarting my lion/FCPX drive and simply importing the "Capture Scratch" file I created using the EOS Plug in.

To not be able to import from camera (or more precisely from the card in a reader) from a 5DMk3 is...dumb.

Don't worry it really does work. Try the file > import > files and let us know if you have any trouble.

Also if you dIdn't copy your files to a drive first from your card, make sure "copy files to events" is checked in preferences.
