My findings:

The broadcast safe filter's hierarchy disallows it to have any effect on footage if you've applied a color correction. FCPX is treating CC as global. The only way to get it to work is to create a compound clip and re-apply.

Can anyone out there confirm that this is true? I like to color correct with the broadcast safe filter on so that I can see the final version of the waveform. Allows me to adjust a red if it's getting cut or whatever.

Are other people finding that it works this way?

AFAIK, it's due to the floating point processing. Do your effects, compound the project, apply a safe filter to the compound. It may also work if you apply it as part of an adjustment layer, but it's been a while since I checked that.

thanks for the info. just so frustrating. perhaps apple can add a global broadcast safe button as some point in the future. that would solve everything and make life a lot easier when getting stuff out the door to air.

Alternately you apply the safe filter to an "adjustment layer" (special title layer) above your edit.
Then you can tweak the colors of your timeline without entering compound clips.

all the best,
