Director 11 -- worth getting?
by Navarro Parker on May 22, 2008 at 8:01:59 pm

So what's the consensus on Director 11? Worth getting?

The improvements seem pretty slim (other than Universal Binary). Still only one undo? Still backwards stage layers? Is Quicktime integration any better? On screen performance any better?

Are there any other modern alternatives to Director?

I haven't purchased it yet, due to Adobe deciding to block out international users froum getting the upgrade from Adobe.com. I could probably get hold of it somehow, if I was willing to shell out a grand for it; but that's quite different than the listed price.

Anyway.

Yes the upgrade is pretty 'slim' on the surface.
Director now runs fine on all current OS'es. If you're on Vista or have a brand new Mac this is of course vital...
Unicode support is very important for deveolopers using non-english languages. Director has a very strong international position, and earlier many have restorted to graphics for text to solve these issues.
General text rendering is also improved, although there's been some debate about this.
For 3D developers, there's a new physics engine which shows some promise. (As a little secret, Havok is still supported, if you have / can obtain the Xtra).
Swf support is improved and updated, so you can use the newest FLV codec (limited to that you can use swf's published for Flash 9 player, but they must not use AS3!).
Improved Quicktime support? Is there a problem with Quicktime? Which version Director supports is determined by the player installed / supplied to the end user.

There is a list of new / updated features on adobe.com. D11 is not the major upgrade everyone was yearning for, but rumour has that the team is busy working on a larger 'real' upgrade which won't be too long. The upgrades in D11 may be absolutely vital for some users, but much less so for others. Depends on your need.
