Hey Everyone,

I'm currently in the process of purchasing myself a new laptop. I need a laptop as I'm moving around a lot and cant afford to be lugging a desktop with me everywhere I go. I'll be using it for editing 1080p footage(shorts around 15min long at most but mainly 5-10)and also for using Ableton. The problem is that I currently have a 800euro budget.I have seen a Toshiba that I was interested in but I don't know the details of what to get. I have been told to get a pre-owned macbook pro instead for the same price. Also the problem is that I can't afford to wait and save up some more as my current laptop is beginning to fail on me and I make short event promo's as my job.Sorry for all the questions , A lot a money to be handing over so want to be sure

Thanks for your help

Mark

Mark,

What software do you plan to use for editing?

This Toshiba is a much better option than a 2-year-old MBP in terms of performance: much faster. But... there are two "buts" actually:

One, the drive is 5400rpm; if you plan to edit off of it, it's recommended to replace it with a 7200rpm model.

Two, the graphics chip. If you plan to use Adobe Premiere Pro, you would want a graphics chip that is supported by Adobe for GPU acceleration, or can be "hacked" to support it.

Hey Alex
Thanks for the reply, I'll be editing with Adobe Premier and using a small amount of after effect. I don't know if I'll be able to change the graphics card but I will be able to get the hard drive upgraded .
Thanks for the reply, appreciated!

Mark

Can't change the graphics chipset on a laptop.

Premiere Pro benefits significantly from GPU acceleration on a supported graphics chipset, so I'd look for laptops with nVidia Quadro 2000M or higher (which is officially supported), or nVidia GeForce "m" chipsets with at least a few hundred CUDA cores and 1GB dedicated memory (640m, 540m, etc.); while officially not supported, Premiere Pro settings can "tweaked" to enable GPU acceleration with GeForce "m" chipsets.

Toshiba Qosmio X870 come with decent specs and GeForce GTX 670M.

Satellite P755-S5198 is under US $1K and comes with GTX 540m 1GB; the screen res is rather low at 1366x768 and the HDD is 5400rpm. The rest of it fairly decent.
