I have the 17" Panasonic HD Field monitor but I would like some suggestions for a reliable smaller HD monitor that I can easily pack along in my essential kit for production travel in 3rd world countries.
My main camera is an HVX200.

Thanks in advance.

Flanders Scientific (FSI) makes a small monitor which comes with their spectacular software-based scopes.

Another thought is if theft or damage is a concern for bringing an expensive (even if small) monitor is to get the 9" Sony portable DVD player that has an external video input. Should have good battery life acting just as a monitor. These are going for between 160-180 bucks.

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
You should be suitably impressed...

Sony portable DVD player

Not likely a HD monitor.
Does it have SDI input?
SD monitors are cheap.

Chris,

Sony portable DVD player

"Not likely a HD monitor."
Correct, not HD. Just a 9" 16x9 AR screen, most likely at DVD resolution.

"Does it have SDI input?"
No, just composite input. This is a consumer device. Can't be calibrated either. It is what it is.

"SD monitors are cheap."
Yes, that is true. My suggestion is also reasonable priced, often available for well under 180 USD, including a 7 hr battery.
I offered it as a low cost alternative compared to the FSI and smallHD dot com. Those are all really nice, but I would be bummed out if a 1,300 dollar monitor got stolen/trashed.
Laugh if you want. Not every gig has the budget or needs a lab grade monitor.
Just sayin'

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into the FSI monitors.
