If you get it, get the service agreement with a vendor. Don't go it alone.

Use an integrator who can design the whole system. Too many variables.

Hello Allan,

Other than the initial configuration, is it a good product? Do you recommend it?

Thanks

The product is good, I think - I've been having trouble with my network so it's hard to tell. I really like the product philosophy (floating metadata masters means fewer required servers than XSAN, the Gig-E LAN client is cheaper, management from any machine, you can format the RAID as you wish, etc.).

My problem is basically that I didn't budget enough for proper support, which I plan to remedy. Support contracts are around 30% of the cost of the licenses for a year. It sucks, but if you do it get the support. There's just a lot of complexity around file-level SAN storage, and no free lunch. Take it from me, I've learned the hard lessons...

Support is in Eastern Europe (GMT+3) and from my experience this can make support issues difficult to get resolved. Communication is so-so.

I agree with Alan as far as make sure your not going it alone. MetaSAN is a good product that has been in the market for many years. Understanding your workflow and the application support is the most important and having the SAN set up correctly from the begining will give you the best expereince over all. Let me know if you have additional questions and will be more then happy to help you out.
