I'm trying to create an effect which imitates the sound you'd get if you did a fast rewind on a physical tape deck over the tape heads, and then pressed stop. Does anyone know a good way to do this digitally on Mac (or Windows. I can access a Windows box if neccesary :) ?

Pro tools had tce (time compression expansion) that let\'s you all kinds of cool stuff relative to time to your audio files. Logic pro 9 has similar tools.I\'m not sure about pc based audio apps though.

Hi, Michael--

I'm actually using DP7 which has similar tools, but it never came out with the rapid acceleration and then slowdown a real tape would.

I have no idea how to replicate that.

Jeffrey, welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

I have an operating reel to reel deck......

Regards,

Ty Ford

PS: I always think it's weird when people use the "drag the needle across the vinyl" effect when 99.9% of people don't even have turntables anymore. Regardless, the sound effect is still buried deeply in our consciousness.

Ty Ford

Well said :)

It's true. I think these are memories of previous idioms, that still carry meaning. Perhaps there is nothing to replace them.

If you have access to video editing, (e.g. Final Cut Pro) you can simply take any video clip with your sountrack, set it to play in reverse, then ramp the head and tail.

The resulting sound is EXACTLY what you'd expect from a tape deck transport.

YMMV.

Wow, that's great. Thank you.

Is there any way to do this in an audio program, say, Logic?

I think everyone fancies having a go at this.
Can you post the audio up somewhere and we can do it, then give it back. A sort of competition!
Peter

Hi, Peter--

Thanks. That would be great.

Sorry about the delay in posting, but I had to get the clip from the client.

This is the section he wanted effected. I hope I did the upload correctly.

710_sample.mp3.zip

Thanks again.

J.

PS: Sorry if I just double-posted. I can't seem to see my posts, or perhaps I'm posting them incorrectly, because they don't seem to be showing in the thread.
