Compression use on a Voice track

Compression use on a Voice track
by James Canning on Jun 26, 2008 at 6:24:05 am

I'm just wondering if there's any advice on the use of compression for a voice track? (meaning, when two people are talking?) especially when the scene goes quieter with their speech.

I understand that compression helps control the peaks, but how can it help bring up the lows? What kind of attack and release should be used?

I've tried this in the past, and the results have been pretty bad.... so any help would be great!
thanks.

Hello James and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,

You're probably better adjusting gain on the tracks. Using compression can help, but it can also make things noisier.

Thanks Ty,

I can see in practise that this would be the best method on record, however I'm in post now and wondering if using a compressor would help?

Depends on how uneven the levels are and how loud the room tone is.

I mix and also use compression and limiting.

I suppose what I'm trying to get advice on, is there a ballpark rule for setting a compressor for a voice track?

From what I've tried, the attack and release seems to confuse me an make things worse. Or to bring quiet passages up, should I have a low threshold on the compressor and if so, how should the attack and release be? I'm a bit confused...

Ideally, riding gain would be the best, but not always possible, like I've just learned...
Any advice would be great!

Oh,

1 mSec Attack
5 mSec release
3:1 ratio
enough threshold to get about 3-5 dB of gain reduction

Regards,

Ty
