down convert audio without noise
by Dustin Cross on Jun 25, 2008 at 10:27:44 pm

Hello,

I have some 16bit 24k audio that I need to convert to 8bit 8k for a phone system. I am using Soundtrack Pro and the final audio is so full of noise you can't understand the person. Everytime they speck it is just static. Is there any way to fix this? The source audio sounds great.

I tried using a band pass filter allowing 400 - 3400Hz and still got too much noise.

Thanks,
Dusty

Hello Dusty and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Different algorithms do better than some when you get down to 8 bit. A lot also depends on how much noise there was in the original recording.

In the old days, realaudio sounded better at low bitrates than mp3s did. I haven't compared lately.
