There is NO reason why they've made this so difficult.

So I have a standard CS6 edit set up. I have my stereo music track which I've dropped on to track 2, and for some reason PPro will only play the right channel. Attempt the following fixes:

1) Track panner: Does nothing

2) Reimport music to project: Does nothing

3) Create new audio track: Does the same thing - plays right channel only

4) Use 'Fill left' effect: Has no effect

5) Look at sequence set up: No obvious reason why the audio is only coming via the right channel, no apparent checkbox or slider to adjust

6) Send track to Audition: Audition treats it as stereo but PPro still treats it as right track only

7) Export multitrack session as mono, create new mono track in PPro and success. The audio is now coming out of both tracks, but of course as mono, not stereo.

Can anyone explain what's gone wrong here or how I can make what is supposed to be a stereo track play in effing stereo???

Thanks in advance,

D.

Let me know if I'm wrong, but I think that if you just use the "fill right" effect, it will take the right channel and fill the left channel with it. It sounds to me as if you're taking the empty channel and trying to put it somewhere. The naming of the effect is a bit counterintuitive, but if you read the help file, it seems pretty straightforward. Here's what Adobe has to say about Preference settings (which you can change, by the way):

Default Track Format Defines the type of track in which the clip audio channels are presented when a clip is added to a sequence—Mono, Stereo, Mono As Stereo, or 5.1.
Mono Maps the source audio channels so that they’re placed on separate mono audio tracks. For example, when you select Mono from the Default Track Format menu, Premiere Pro maps each source channel to a separate mono track on capture or import. If you capture from a stereo source with this setting, Premiere Pro maps each of the source channels to a separate monaural track. You can apply the Mono track format to clips containing any number of audio channels. Importing a file containing 5.1 channels maps them to six audio tracks. When you add the clip to the sequence, the clips on the separate mono tracks remain linked together.

Stereo Maps the source audio channels so that paired channels are placed on stereo audio tracks. You can apply the Stereo track format to clips containing any number of audio channels. If the clip doesn’t contain an even number of channels, a silent channel is created. The silent channel is paired with the unpaired channel when the clip is added to a sequence.

Mono As Stereo Maps the source audio channels so each is placed on a stereo audio track. Premiere Pro duplicates the audio from each mono source channel and places it in the left and right channels of a stereo track. You can apply the Mono As Stereo format to clips containing any number of audio channels.

5.1 Maps the source audio channels so that one or more groups of six channels are placed into separate 5.1 surround audio tracks. If the number of source channels is not a multiple of six, Premiere Pro creates a 5.1 surround audio track with silence on one or more channels.

Hi Dylan,

You are correct that it should not be this difficult, and it is not for 99.9% of users. Obviously, there is either something wrong with the audio clip, your system, or parameters in Premiere.

Have you tried other sound clips? Do they work? Different project?

Also, FILL LEFT is not the correct effect - that will take whatever is on the LEFT channel of your stereo clip and put it on BOTH channels. If for some reason your source file is silent on the left channel, FILL LEFT will result in silence on both channels then. FILL RIGHT will duplicate the RIGHT sound to the LEFT channel.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

I can't rule out some sort of glitch since this is the first time in CS6 this has arisen. Back in the 5.5 days, things like this would happen all the time - you had to specify the type of audio a particular track would play and god help you if you try to put anything else in there.

All I can say is, PPro is not treating what should be a stereo track as stereo, and attempting to pan it, dupe it to a different track or anything else doesn't seem to work. (And yes, I tried Fill Right as well as that had no effect either).

I'm still relatively new to PPro, (from FCP of course), but I can say you never encountered these sorts of problems with FCP. If audio was panned left or right, it was a 1 second fix.

For the life of me, I can't find the 1 second fix in PPro.

Give us a screen grab of the audio mixer while playing the clip so we can see the levels jump and the panning knobs on the tracks.

Also send a shot of your audio preferences, all of them.

Finally select the clip in the timeline and show the effect controls so we can see the clips property values for panning and volume.

Good video that gives an overview of the audio functionality of CS6.

Thanks for responding Jon, but unfortunately, the 'mono' fix I applied has overwritten the issue. I'll look at recreating but up against deadlines at the moment.
