I just got Premiere Pro CS6 and a brand new MBP. It's great except I have no codecs now! Since there's no firewire on my laptop (waiting for the FW800 to thunderbolt adapter) I had to capture HDV to another laptop into FCP7. I copied the files to my new laptop and they only play audio, no video. I pull them into Premiere Pro CS6 and it gives me a codec error and won't import the files. I tried opening them in Mpeg Streamclip and the video doesn't even show up. This is not the first codec that's missing, though. I had videos exported from iMovie that my new laptop doesn't recognize due to codec issues.

Any ideas where I can download these codecs? at this point I'm considering borrowing a copy of FCP7 to just get the codecs installed then deleting the program. I don't understand why these files are suddenly gone like this. It's beyond frustrating and putting some serious pressure on the project I need done by Sunday.

Ya, put FCP on the new laptop, this will get your Prores/among others.
You don't have to edit with it.

I believe you will also get a lot of or all of the final cut package codecs installed if you just buy compressor from the app store.

Try Help > Updates. That should fix your problem.

I've checked and i have the latest updates. I'm really trying to not install older software (like FCP7 or Compressor) on my new laptop, but it might be coming to that.

If you capture HDV into FCP, only computers with FCP on it can view those files. That HDV codec is proprietary to FCP. And unlike ProRes, there is no decoder built in to QT for this.

Same with DVCPRO HD.

Can you post a screenshot of the panel that pops up when you first create a sequence?

Do you see AVCHD/DVCPro/HDV preset etc.?

If not, you may have to re-install and activate online before you start using Premiere.

All the presets show up correctly. Everything looks normal. Is there any way to test if it's just the FCP HDV capture that Shane mentioned? I'll try some XDCam footage tomorrow at work and see if it works ok.

I'm used to seeing the long list of codecs under quicktime exporting and all, is that just because I don't have any apple pro apps installed? I'm starting to think that just installing compressor or something would be a good idea to get those codecs into my quicktime exporting options and not worry about it.

Is there a way to convert the FCP HDV footage to standard HDV footage? or do I just need to re-capture in Premiere Pro? I have access to PP CS3 on a machine at work. I can't imagine that the HDV codec would be different between then and now since HDV has been around for a while.

[Rob Lahoda] "I'll try some XDCam footage tomorrow at work and see if it works ok."

AAaaa....XDCAM has the same issue. ProRes is the only format that really works without FCP installed. yeah...it's a pain.

[Rob Lahoda] "I'm used to seeing the long list of codecs under quicktime exporting and all, is that just because I don't have any apple pro apps installed?"

Yup. FCS installs a lot more codecs...the editing ones it uses.

[Rob Lahoda] "Is there a way to convert the FCP HDV footage to standard HDV footage?"

There is no standard. FCP captures as a form of Apple HDV...native, but only FCP can see it. Avid does it native too...but as MXF files. Adobe? Captures it as MPEG-2...which it is...but into a format that Adobe sees. I think other apps can open it too.

[Rob Lahoda] "or do I just need to re-capture in Premiere Pro?"

Yes. Capture in the NLE you intend to use.

Will just installing Compressor work? Or do I need to install FCP completely?

Some buy and install Compressor alone from the Apple Store in order to do just that...so it should work.

If you haven't already installed bought Compressor, there's a way to install the Codecs without buying anything:

Sorry I forgot one more point. Look at the last comment on the blog post for how to install the codecs without having a Apple Pro App installed.
