Hi Daniel,
I see you have been editing with Adobe software for many years, which is great!
Understandably every editor has their own way to work and Adobe is very open about creating options for editors to work their own way.
The Shuttle and Jog controls have been around for a long time. I have been editing for over 12 years and never used them once I found JKL control and using the playhead (CTI for many versions) was simply faster and less mousing.
If you really love a workflow with a shuttle and jog, I'm surprised you haven't got your hands on a proper wheel. It is way quicker to use that than you pull and position and reposition with the mouse.
There are many varieties of the wheel, a simple wheel only or something with buttons across it which can be assigned with shortcuts, and again boost productivity once you get used to it.
It's entirely upto you. I personally feel gaining more real estate for content is more important to me than buttons I don't use and haven't for years since I know the shortcut keys.
I doubt it will come back to the UI. One never knows but even if it does come back a wheel is still a great way to go.
Cheers JB
