 | 3rd party monitoring - not quite there yet!
by Justin Ferar on May 7, 2012 at 6:34:31 pm |
Just installed 6.0 (with high hopes!) and was dissapointed to see a very discernible latency issue with Adobe transmit and Black Magic Intensity Pro.
Basically the monitor is a few frames behind no matter the codec (5d DSLR, P2 AVC-intra, etc).
Wondering about AJA or other BM users - any latency issues?

Question - how are you determining latency?
1) Looking at computer screen and external monitor at same time
2) Lip sync doesn't match on external display
I ask because HDMI monitors can introduce a bit of lag with internal processing. Heck, I can have 2 TVs at home tuned to the same channel in different rooms and have a second or two of difference between them, big echo.
If audio is the issue, you should have your audio monitors connected to the display to ensure sync. I use Matrox MXO2 with HDMI to LED display, and connect my speakers to the audio out on rear of display.
If you're just saying the two displays are a little off from one another...I personally watch one or the other, I wouldn't care if they match perfectly, not sure how that's a big issue

Thanks for the reply Jeff,
I know it's off because I've been using the same BM card with FCP for years.
Also, there is no latency issue with 5.5.

Just to clarify, monitoring was definitely very flakey in 5.5 with my setup but at least it was NOT latent.
I would also add that so far scabbing with 6.0 is vastly improved with 5d DSLR footage - dare I say "snappy" which is pretty much revolutionary though I'm still not sure if I wan't to grade h264 - but it's nice to have the option.
While I'm at it I would also like to thank the Adobe gods for a making audio scrub a keyboard short cut which was just down right emabarassing not to have earlier.

With CS 5.5, you either had external monitoring...or the Mercury Playback Engine. You couldn't have both. CS6 and TRANSMIT allows you to have both. Baby steps...it's getting there.
And know that third party card support is provided by the third parties themselves. Adobe isn't responsible with getting the BMD cards or AJA cards or Matrox cards to work. That is up to the card makers to get them to work. Which is why support for one card is better, or comes sooner, than another.

"Scabbing" is not an editorial term that I am aware of. I meant scrubbing. But scabbing sounds cool. Stung by Apple autocorrect again!

AJA has not "officially" released their CS6 drivers. Unless any beta testers want to chime in, it is a wait and see till they release them.

I think I can chime in. I have the AJA Kona 3, and CS6 beta, and playback is a LOT better than in CS5.5. Not quite frame accurate, I have a 2-3 frame lag. But the drivers are still in beta...so...

Thanks for the info Shane. Figured you or Tom would chime in and set things straight.

Ding dong! Im chiming in as well. I get about a 1 frame difference between the Program Monitor and the Kona 3 hooked up to the external engineering monitor. I listen to Kona 3 audio out and things are cool.
Since I either watch one image or the other (as opposed to watching one with the left eye and the other with the right eye :P) I am very happy with Transmit and the added performance I get from stable , CUDA sequence playback.

Where can one find these AJA beta drivers for CS6?
Quite sad the LHe is now EOL. We have 8 of those suckers. We knew they wouldn't work with Avid, but not even with CS6? I think resale value just dropped to $0. Any FCP 7 legacy hold outs want a great deal on some KONA cards? ;-)

[David Jahns] "Where can one find these AJA beta drivers for CS6?"
One has to be on the beta, and vetted by AJA.

Thanks, Shane. Figured as much. I should work on getting vetted, eh?
We have a borrowed Thunderbolt ioXT for iMac & Avid MC 6 testing - I have to send it back soon, and was hoping to give it a CS6 run through before returning it.
The good news is that the iMac/tbolt AJA seems like an entirely valid option for an editing workstation. I as quite impressed, actually. If we stay on the Mac, most of our edit stations could live with that setup just fine...

I found out yesterday that my LHe is not going to be supported by CS6. Since I still require analog IO occassionally I'm considering buying a Matrox MXO2 LE, so I can have an external box and be flexible between my Mac Pro and MBP. It seems like great bang for the buck. My other options seem to be the BMD DeckLink Extreme 3D or any of the AJA KONA cards (LHe Plus for example).
The MXO2 LE is basically the same cost as a DL Extreme 3D or an LHe+. Are there any compelling reasons to choose an internal-only option over the MXO2 LE? What about jumping to the $1500 category with an LHi? I know I'm not the only person wondering what to replace old LHe's with... Thanks in advance.
Cheers, Brian

Take a look at this page and watch the video found at lower right, second from bottom, titled "Interoperability with Third Party".
Dave Helmly demonstrates CS6 Mercury Transmit with the BlueFish card and there is definitely a couple frames of lag between PC monitor and external display.

That lag between broadcast monitor and desktop monitor is not unusual at all. We have some older plasmas that are quite slow to process the signal, and often lag a few frames behind. The question is, can you offset it to match? And can you control the audio sync?
Smoke 2012 has the best implementation of that I've ever seen. 1) There's a preference for whether audio syncs to the desktop, or the broadcast monitor, and 2) you can control the delay to within a hundredth of a frame to create perfect sync with any monitor.

Hi,
Just installed CS6 & having issues with Blackmagic HD Extreme. Neither computer nor external monitor match the BM audio. It seems to drift a little as well. As OP mentioned this wasn't an issue with 5.5.2.
Hopefully there's a solution to this, I was under the impression external monitoring was supposed to be one of the new and exciting improvements in CS6.
I'm working with a 2010 MacPro 8 Core with an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 and BM software v 9.5.1
Thanks!

Hi Gerry,
So we meet again on another forum ;-)
I'm also (still) having issues here with external monitoring. Blackmagic Decklink SDI, Mac Pro 2010, 8-core, 24GB RAM, Quadro 4000.
External monitor is 5 frames behind program monitor window.
Audio is sync though with the external monitor, when I set Preferences->Playback AudioDevice: to "Blackmagic Playback"
I filed a bug report, and a feature request for a preference to trim/offset the external monitor timing.
