I read with interest the thread below about the possibility of Adobe supporting Radeon cards in MacPros, but I don't have the option of waiting to see if it materializes. I am currently running a 5770 in my early 2008 Mac Pro w/16GB ram.

It seems there are only three Nvidia cards available for the Mac that CS6 presently supports:

GTX-285 - $300 approx. (only used that I can find).
Quadro 4000 - $700-$800
Quadro 4800 - $1000+

Does anyone out there have direct experience with how CS6 runs with the GTX285 in a MacPro? Is this card going to be acceptable or will I be wanting to upgrade to the 4000 or 4800 in a month?

Just looking to get a general idea of the performance spread.

Thanks!

I got a sneak peak at CS6 and have been getting great performance with BOTH PrP and AE. I am running the Quadro 4000. That would be my suggestion

concur with Tom.

The Quadro 4000 is a great value and a workhorse with CS 5.5 / 6.0

It is definitely worth the extra cash getting the extra performance
over the GTX card.

When you render, you hear the little fans speed up. Fun Stuff!

Just a quick note, the Quadro FX 4800 is an older and slower card then the Quadro 4000.... Nvidia dropped the "FX" tag and restarted the numbering with the new fermi cards.

I currently have a 285 in three systems in my shop running 5.5. Should we invest in the 4000 (x3)?

Thanks!

The Specs would imply that the Quadro is only marginally faster with Premiere then the 285. Probably not worth the upgrade cost.

That's from looking at the specs. Your actual results may be different.

If you want to try it, buy one first, and make sure you can return the Quadro for a full refund if you don't see enough performance boost.

The 4000 is a speed demon when rendering in After Effects.

I forgot about that. That's because it's a workstation card and After Effects uses the OpenGL parts of the card, rather then CUDA, where it is only marginally faster then the 285.

So to answer your question Banks, you really will have to try a Quadro in your workflow to see if it makes sense to buy one or not.

Just a note, CS6 disables OpenGL for rendering, and uses it only for previews. CS5.5 and before use OpenGL for rendering and previews, which apparently can lead to problems.

Thanks to you both for your input. We'll do just that - get one and see if it really makes a difference.

Thanks again,

Banks

Hello Banks,

i am thinking of buying a quadro 4000. How did it affect your workflow? does it only speed up rendering or preview as well?

Thanks for your Input.
Cheers Oskar
