Hello,
I'm an experienced FCP editor testing Premiere as a replacement for FCP 7. This is my second project on Premiere.
I've imported some footage shot on a Sony EX-3 into Premiere 5.5.2 but the audio isn't importing properly. On many of the clips the audio just stops halfway through the clip. When I view the clips in Final Cut Pro in Log and Transfer the audio is fine.
Any suggestions?

Gerry, are you using the Media Browser Panel to bring the clip in from the original EX3 folder or just importing into the Project Panel?

Right. In that case this calls for the Adobe experts. Call the Adobe Support Tech phone number (Google for it). Ask for Vinay. He knows his stuff.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the referral at Adobe, I appreciated it.
I'll give them a call, but based on the number of problems I've had so far with Premiere in the short time I've been working with it I'm a little hesitant to use them on any more projects, which is a shame because there are a lot of nice features there. Dynamic link isn't working for me and I'm having tons of crashes in a very straightforward project on my Mac Pro.

Gerry, I use DL with AE a lot. And have found a workflow that avoids any issues than can crop up . The trick that I find helps me a lot is this.
When I return to a project that already has some dynamic links I just select on of those linked clips and select "Edit Original". That opens the preexisting AE project. Then when I am ready to send a regular clip over, the AE project is already open and a new comp is created.
If when returning to an existing PrP / AE project, I just select the regular clip and select "Make an AE Project" it will create a new project with a similar name to the Original AE project and that where things get screwed up.
As to problems with XDCAM, I havent done any projects with that format so unfortunately I have no helpful comments there. My work with P2/MXF, 5D, Prores, Motion-JPEG and a few others has gone smoothly. Sorry to hear that has not been your experience. If you have a XDcam clip youd like me to try to work with, Id be glad to help.

Hey Tom,
I was trying to use dynamic link to stabilize some shots in AE. II stabilize the first shot, it works, showing up on the PP timeline. I stabilize the second shot and my first shot in PP gets switched out with second shot I stabilized.
But why should there have to be a work around, shouldn't it just work? If one has been using software for a while and new features are added one can be more inclined to use work arounds, but as a new user this is a real turn off. I wanted to try Premiere because of the native editing, not working, dynamic link, not working...
From what I gather the software runs much better on PC. OK, just needed to let of some steam...

If you follow the workflow I told you about, you most likely would not have the problem with dynamic link. :D It sounds like you are doing the EXACT thing I said will create problems.Im sure this problem with naming conventions will be addressed soon.
I guess you're not interested in troubleshooting the issue with XDcam since you didn't respond to my offer.
I can understand your frustration since I have a few of my own with the software. If you are real unhappy try Avid 6, but I see on their web forum users are unhappy with several issues as well.

Hi Tom,
I do appreciate your offer on the XDCAM clips but there isn't anything wrong with the clips, they play fine in FCP. I"ll try again on my tower and see if the issue replicates itself.
I don't really understand how to use your method for dynamic link applies to my situation. You seem to be able to create the dynamic links correctly but perhaps I'm misunderstanding?
Avid MC is definitely under consideration but I'd like to give PP a fair shake first.

This is a classic case of PP getting confused. It usually is a result of have 2 AE PROJECTS with the same name. I find it best to have 1 AE project per Premiere project. Then I create separate COMPS for each clip that needs dynamic linking.
When Premiere sees 2 AE projects (one for each DL clip you create) it gets confused and images get switched. This is a naming convention problem with the software at this point. Yes its a problem but the work around is easy once you understand how it works. Reread my previous step by step description for further clarification. Good luck :D

I edit with XDCAM EX footage a lot - I shoot with an EX-3, so I can tell you Premiere Pro works with the footage very well. You mentioned that you brought the footage in from the media browser. I don't ever really do that with XDCAM footage - not saying you can't, but I usually don't. I always import the entire BPAV folder from straight from the SxS card. Try that and see if you see an improvement.
Also, you mention that the clips play fine in FCP - are you trying to bring into PPro the log and transferred clips that FCP uses? That may be part of the problem. PPro likes the native files best...try those and let me know if that helps.
As for Dynamic Link...I often have a number of AE comps within one AE project that are linked in PPro, so I have a feeling something odd must be going on. I know I've had multiple stabilized clips before so I don't think it's just that effect that causing the issue.
Just out of curiousity, are you trying to stabilize portions of the same clip, and are these clips the log and transferred clips from FCP?

Thanks for clarifying that for me, I kept everything in the same AE project (and avoided numbers in the file name) and dynamic link's been working great. I've also used your method for opening the AE project file first. Thanks!!!
Eric: I'm using the browser to import the BPAV folders, not the files transcoded from FCP. Working directly off the SXS cards is not a practical solution for me since I'm working with a project shot over 9 days.
I'm just going to transcode everything to ProRes, I don't have time to troubleshoot this and am interested to see if my experience is smoother than my last working with DSLR footage.

PPro does make an audio conform for these files and where you have these files targeted to a drive that may be full or if there is any sort of a drive permissions issue, those files can't be written completely.
Obviously when you make a ProRes conversion, the file is pre-converted, so that would not show the same issue.

Hi Tim,
I think you've pinpointed the issue, when I drag a file into another drive and then import it the audio is fine. The file was initially on the laptops hardrive (which has a lot of free space). I've tried repairing my permissions & trashing my preferences but that didn't solve the problem.
Any other suggestions?

Sorry - I didn't make it more clear. I didn't mean to say work directly from the cards. Instead, import the entire BPAV folder into Premiere Pro. Instead of using the Media Browser to bring each clip in, use File -> Import -> select the BPAV folder, then in the bottom of the import window choose Import Folder. That will import the whole folder. You'll get an box that comes up with some import error messages - just skip past that. I've always done that method for bringing XDCAM EX footage in, and I've never had your issue.
