Video storage and sharing

At work we have 3-5 people working with video at a time. So far we've been passing around a HDD with all of the video files. In our situation, the connection from external HD is much faster that trying to place all of the video on our network.

Are there any common, better, solutions to this? How to larger studios set up their video databases and sharing for multiple users, back it up and synchronize if necessary?

Do some research on "Storage Area Networks" (SAN) for video. That should get you started...
Or you could DIY via this article from Bob Zelin.
