Best file format for client previews (from Mac PP)?
by Anssi Puisto on Nov 3, 2009 at 2:04:23 pm

Hi all,

For years I have been sending video previews to my clients in mpeg1 format, because it proved to be working in all computers and never caused any trouble. Now I have changed from pc to mac, and can no longer export mpeg1 from Premiere.

In spite of extensive googling I could not find educated answer to the problem: which file format and video/audio codecs would be the safest ones to use now?

- must work natively in Macs and PC:s (XP->)
- 15-40 second clips must be of reasonable quality well under 10Mb size
- must export from Mac PP/AME natively or with reasonably priced 3rd party plugin.

Shouldn't be too hard to find better format than mpeg1? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Anssi

There is no good file format that works with Win / Mac native, except Flash. Even Flash actually needs to go online to download the software.

The latest version of Windows media supports some QuickTime formats, but it'll be a while until everyone has it.

The best way to go about this for future projects would be hire a programmer who could set you up with a simple online video preview area.

No more worries about size in email attachments and the client can easily forward the link to anyone. Another is to setup a private Youtube account (limited to 10 minutes).

Or if you have 800 bucks to blow, take a look at MediaBatch

Other than that, either ask the client what they prefer: Mac or Windows format, then render a QuickTime H.264 or a Windows Media file, or both.

And I forgot to mention the clip notes export.

You can either embed a video in PDF or link to a streamed version. It support Quicktime or Windows media.

The client can easily add comments tied to timecode and send you back the file which then appears as marker with comments in the timeline.

If you haven't used that function, I recommend you give it a shot, it's amazingly simple to use on the client side as well.

Hi Vince,

Thank you for your information and suggestions. That is what I suspected.

The online preview system would be a great idea, I have to do some research on that. (And I do have YouTube account too, I just didn't come to think about that.)

I think I'll go and do next some testing with flash. Until all the computers of the world unite...

Thanks,
Anssi
