Premiere can't play uncompressed AVI
by wei sonk on Nov 2, 2009 at 9:59:19 am

I have read other threads similar with my problem, which can play with window media player, can import avi but can not play in Premiere source monitor. Some of reasons they don't install codec for their particular avi.

But my avi is uncompressed. The video is taken by DC Canon Ixus 850 IS, old model not DSLR. The video property is 640 * 480, 1'18" long, 110 MB, 30 frames/sec, don't show any codec in this file property and in Premiere CS 4 property. I sure this is uncompressed avi.

When it plays avi in source monitor, it always stay in first frame, audio is fine.

I had install ffdshow(codec package) before this problem happen. The first time it can play avi in Premiere, but few days ago it can't. During those days I don't install any other codec or change any window vista setting. Every time I import avi it will load ffdshow codec, so I try to disable it when import avi, doesn't work. And try to change Premiere sequence to :
editing mode: Destop
timebase: 30 frames/sec (match my avi)
frame size: 640 * 480 (match my avi)
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.0 (match my avi)
fields: no field
display format : 30 frames
preview file format: Microsoft AVI
codec: have try all of them
and finally doesn't work, I already crazy. Please, help me!!!!!!

I can guarantee you that your camera is not recording uncompressed. The file will be using some kind of compression and the codec for it has become corrupt. Look up a converter for the model camera you shoot with. I don't know what your camera's codec is, but it's not uncompressed.

Your post elsewhere says you are from Sydney which makes me wonder why you would shoot 30 FPS, when your standard is 25.

No matter. The information I have on your camera is: The HF100 uses a 1/3.2in, 3.3-megapixel, CMOS image sensor and an increasingly popular video compression system called AVCHD to squeeze high-definition movies and still pictures onto regular-size, high-capacity SD (called SDHC) cards. Based on the widely adopted MPEG-4 AVC/h.264 codec, the resulting HD movies look fabulous when displayed via HDMI or component connections, particularly those recorded at the highest 17Mbits/sec FXP setting.

So if you don't have the MPEG-4 AVC/h.264 codec on your computer, you may have problems.

Since the camera's native resolution is HD and not SD, I'm wondering if you have created a standard definition project and you're trying to play back HD video in it. That can result in playback problems as well.

Have you tried a render of your timeline?

Lastly, uncompressed SD video (and lots of HD compressed codecs) need a drive array to play back without dropped frames. If you expect one 7200 RPM drive to play back uncompressed SD, you have too high an expectation for the poor drive.

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

The file format of your video is "Mjpeg", you need to load a Mjpeg codec in your machine, you can try either Main Concept's or Morgan, either can be found with a search on the net, you can download a trial ver. to see how it works

today i download GSpot to check my codec, it says Mjpeg, and codec are installed.

the sequence in Premiere is excatly same with my video, same resolution. the video can be played with WMM very smoothly.

I haven't try rending.
