Zoom Query – CS3

I working in native HDV (1080i), and all my footage is in this format.
I want to zoom in on a certain clip, increasing the scale from 100 to 170.
However, when I look at the clip, after rendering the effect, in the program monitor the image is considerably softer and less well defined than the original.
This is exactly what I would expect if the viewing window was showing the image at 100% size, but it is set to about 30%. At this resolution shouldn’t there be enough ‘spare’ pixels from the raw footage to offset the loss of detail when zooming?
Or am I doing something wrong? Should I use a different filter or something?

If your HDV footage is in a HDV sequence you have no room to soom in without degrading the quality.
Judging image quality, in Premiere or Photoshop should be done at native resolution (100% zoom). Any other zoom factor can result in artifacts and aberrations.

I understand that at 100% and zoom is bound to lose quality. But I am planning on exporting at around 25%. That should more than offset the loss of quality from the zoom ... shouldn't it?

If you are planning to go from HDV and export as SD you can expect a quality hit as Premiere (and most NLEs) do a poor job of deinterlacing. You wont be able to accurately preview this during editing.
Make sure "Use Maximum Render Quality" is checked in the AME wing menu and be prepared to wait very long.
